Finance Subcommittee reviews FY26 shortfalls, projects 4.2% budget rise for FY27

Monson School Committee Finance Subcommittee reviewed a preliminary town deficit of $569,000 and approved FY27 school budget parameters. Chair Karen Nothe-Valley led the review of FY26 monthly variances, including $600 in plumbing repairs at Granite Valley and $750 for water tank inspection at Monson High School. The school department's level-service budget requires a 4.2 percent increase over FY26 once a $117,769 state grant reduction is applied; transportation operations will seek an additional $76,165.
Superintendent Paul Foster reported a $75,000 state earmark and pledged to continue advocating with legislators for sustained education funding as the school department prepares to present its budget to the town Finance Committee on February 9, 2026.
